This is Laziel

— but most just call him Laz.

Laz didn't plan to fall in love with cycling. It found him. After being retrenched during a tough season, a borrowed bike and empty calendar opened up something unexpected: a life changing journey on two wheels.

What started as short rides to Sea Point quickly turned into adventures up Suikerbossie, across Chappies, and eventually into the deep gravel roads of the Cederberg and beyond. Along the way, Laz found more than just landscapes, he found a community, freedom, and a new way to experience himself.

"I can't really label what cycling is to me. It's how I move, how I explore, how I escape, how I connect. Even on my worst days, I can ride, and that's enough."

The Journey

Known for his warmth and open mind, Laz is a familiar face in the Cape Town cycling scene. He's passionate about growing the cycling community, sharing knowledge, and helping others get started, whether it's giving tips on what to wear, or telling you what to expect when you're riding gravel into the unknown.

From group rides out of the Clubhouse to taking on some of the continent's toughest races like The Gallows or Road to Desolation. Laz keeps pushing his limits and finding joy in the challenge. Whether it's headwinds, punctures, or wild terrain, he rides through it all with heart.

The Turning Point

His connection to bikes runs deep. His first real gravel mission, riding the iconic Mos Def through the Karoo, was a turning point. There were zebras, giraffes, dry mouths, shared food, and even stolen bikes returned by luck. The adventure didn't just give him new experiences, it gave him a new way of seeing the world.

"I didn't even know what a groupset was. All I knew was how the ride made me feel. And that feeling, that freedom, has stayed with me ever since."

Laz's story is one of resilience, discovery, and openness. He's proof that you don't need to have it all figured out. Sometimes, all it takes is a borrowed bike, a bit of curiosity, and the courage to take your own route.
